Il 25 ottobre 1939 nasce a Rottach-Egern, in Germania, Andreas «Anderl» Mannhardt. Nel marzo 1961, a 21 anni, compie la prima ascensione invernale della parete nord dell'Eiger. Il 22 giugno 1962, con Toni Kinshofer e Siegfried Löw, apre una nuova via sulla parete Diamir del Nanga Parbat (8.126m): seconda ascensione assoluta della montagna, e prima nuova via aperta su un ottomila. Nella discesa Löw muore; Mannhardt subisce gravi congelamenti.
