On 25 January 1924, the first ‘White Olympics’ – that is, the first edition of the Winter Olympics – began in Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc in France. There were six disciplines in this inaugural edition (biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, skiing and skating), and 49 medals were awarded (16 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze).
