11 December is International Mountain Day. This initiative dates back to 1992, when, during the adoption of Chapter 13 of Agenda 21, “Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development”, institutional discussions began on sustainable development for mountain regions. On that occasion, 2002 was designated as the International Year of Mountains. During 2002, amongst the many initiatives on this theme, the UN General Assembly designated 11 December of each year as “International Mountain Day”.
