On 14 July 1865, the expedition comprising Edward Whymper, Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson and Douglas Robert Hadow, accompanied by the guides Michel Croz and Peter Taugwalder (father and son), reached the summit of the Matterhorn for the first time via the Hornli Ridge. During the descent, a terrible accident claimed the lives of four members of the party (Hudson, Croz, Hadow and Douglas).
