On 13 August 1792, a group of porters and scientists led by De Saussure reached the summit of the Klein Matterhorn, or Little Matterhorn (3,883 m), for the first time. Among the key figures in this pioneering mountaineering expedition were, alongside Horace-Bénédict de Saussure from Geneva, Nicolas-Théodore de Saussure, Jean-Marie Couttet, Jean-Baptiste Erin, and five other guides who accompanied them to the panoramic summit without any particular difficulty.
