Quintino Sella Refuge at Felik, from the Bettaforca Pass
Introduction
The route to the Quintino Sella Refuge is usually frequented by mountaineers preparing to make the ascents of the Castore and Lyskamm, but can also be considered an interesting excursion destination for experienced hikers. The hut's location on the edge of the Felik glacier, at the foot of beautiful peaks of over 4000 m, will repay the efforts and difficulties encountered.
Description
To reach the Bettaforca pass (2727m) you can either take the Monterosa Ski lifts or ascend from Staffal following itinerary
.
Leaving the chairlift, take a small road heading north, after a few metres you come to the start of path
which begins to ascend, leaving the rocky ridges of the watershed crest between the Ayas and Gressoney valleys on your left. Immediately the hiker's view of the splendid spectacle of the Monte Rosa glaciers appears: from the Lyskamm to the Vincent Pyramid, the panorama is truly grandiose. After rejoining the little road, take the path again, which crosses a short slope until it joins a short clearing: from here, proceed halfway up the mountainside in a stony environment until it joins the crest at the Passi di Bettolina Inferiore (2905m, 0h30').
Having ignored the descents to Saint-Jacques, first to the left, and to Staffal, later to the right, the trail continues upwards across a long scree plateau until reaching the Upper Bettolina Pass (3100m, 1h00').
On reaching the pass, ignore the path that descends to the Pian di Verra Superiore and proceed for a short distance along the wide ridge to leave it on the left by going halfway up the scree slope and then climbing up the scree slope until reaching the ridge again (3280m, 1h30').
The trail continues again for a stretch on the Gressoney side until it joins the ridge again, at the level of a gigantic cairn, to begin the most demanding part of the itinerary (3465m, 2h00').
The trail continues on the ridge, which narrows until the start of the fixed ropes: thanks to these, a series of very exposed passages on the ridge can be overcome until reaching a short wooden footbridge. After the footbridge, turn slightly to the right, still assisted by the ropes, to ascend the last rocky prominence before the hut. The path snakes its way between the rocks, with a few uneasy passages, until it reaches the plateau at the foot of the Felik glacier on which the Quintino Sella hut is built (3585 m, 3h00').
The descent follows the same route as the ascent (2h00').
