Introduction
The Sanctuary of Notre-Dame des Neiges del Miserin is a jewel set among the peaks of the Aosta Valley, located on the shores of Lake Miserin at an altitude of 2,583 metres. This sacred place, also known as the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Nevi, is located in the municipality of Champorcher, in a strategic position at the crossroads of three passes leading to Fénis, Cogne and Valsoana. Its remote location makes it accessible mainly through hiking trails, with paths starting from Dondena and winding through breathtaking alpine landscapes.
Description
The sanctuary building is striking for its simple but fascinating architecture. Built in the 17th century and renovated in 1881, it has two characteristic reinforcing 'spurs' on the long sides, giving solidity to the structure. The interior is spacious and bright, with a stone floor and a barrel vault made of larch wood that creates a cosy and spiritual atmosphere. Over the centuries, the sanctuary has undergone several restorations, most recently in 2000, to preserve its integrity and historical value.
The history of the sanctuary is steeped in devotion and tradition. Its origins date back to 1658, when it was built as a sign of thanksgiving for protection from the plague that was raging at the time. Every year, on 5 August, the feast of the Madonna delle Nevi is celebrated, attracting numerous pilgrims from the surrounding valleys, including Cogne, Valsoana and Fénis. This centuries-old tradition testifies to the sanctuary's importance in local culture and spirituality.
A fascinating feature of the sanctuary is the presence of ex-votos along its walls, represented by painted tablets telling stories of graces received and deep devotions. These ex-votos offer a glimpse of popular faith and traditions that have spanned the centuries. In addition, the legend tells of a Christian Roman soldier of the Theban legion who, having escaped a massacre, took refuge in this valley, bringing with him a statue of the Madonna, later found by shepherds in the 16th century.
For visitors, the sanctuary is accessible during the summer season, with well-marked paths starting from Dondena. There is no entrance fee, but it is advisable to enquire about the times of religious services and any guided tours. The sanctuary is part of a tourist circuit that includes the nearby Miserin refuge, offering opportunities for refreshments and overnight stays for hikers. The area is protected and enhanced by the local authorities, ensuring the conservation of its natural and cultural heritage.
