Province of Savona
Introduction
The province of Savona is one of the four provinces of Liguria, located in the central-western part of the region and facing the Ligurian Sea. Its territory extends from the Riviera delle Palme to the Apennine and Alpine hinterland, covering an area of 1,544.54 km² and a population of approximately 267,621 residents (2025).
Description
It comprises 69 municipalities, with the capital Savona, and is bordered to the west by the province of Imperia, to the north by Piedmont (provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria), to the east by the Metropolitan City of Genoa and to the south by the Ligurian Sea. The provincial administration is based in the Palazzo Nervi in Savona.
The provincial territory is very varied: from the coast with the famous seaside resorts of Alassio, Loano, Finale Ligure, passing through the Albenga plain - the main flat extension of Liguria - to the inland valleys and the foothills of the Ligurian Alps and the Ligurian Apennines. More than 60% of the area is wooded, one of the highest in Italy, with chestnut, oak and beech forests.
The province of Savona is home to three regional nature parks - Beigua, Bric Tana and Piana Crixia - and three nature reserves, including the islands of Bergeggi and Gallinara and the Rio Torsero Reserve. Numerous caves of natural and historical interest (such as the Grotta della Basura di Toirano) dot the hinterland.
