Access

The infrastructure network easily connects the territory: the Adriatic coast offers quick access from the north and south via the state road SS16 and the A14 motorway, while connections with the inland areas are ensured by a network of provincial and regional roads that cross valleys and villages, with main railway stations in Chieti, Vasto, Lanciano and San Salvo. The nearest international airport is Abruzzo Airport in Pescara, which facilitates national and European connections.

Introduction

The province of Chieti, located in the south-eastern part of Abruzzo, is characterised by the morphological variety of its territory, which stretches from the beaches facing the Adriatic Sea to the Majella mountains. With an area of about 2,600 km² and more than 380,000 inhabitants in 104 municipalities, it is one of the most dynamic and populous areas in the region. The provincial capital Chieti stands on a scenic hill, maintaining strong ties with its ancient historical tradition.

Description

The provincial landscape alternates between coastal plains, cultivated hills and mountainous areas with parallel valleys furrowed by rivers such as the Sangro, Trigno, Aterno-Pescara, Sinello and Foro. The presence of the Majella, with peaks such as Mount Amaro (2,793 metres), contributes to the environmental and naturalistic richness. The inland areas show more rugged and wild scenery, in contrast with a coastline that offers sandy shores, nature reserves and picturesque promontories such as the Costa dei Trabocchi, famous for its ancient wooden fishing machines.
The economic fabric of the province is characterised by strong industrialisation, with a high concentration of manufacturing activities in the chemical, food, textile and mechanical sectors, complemented by excellence in agribusiness and wine-growing. Products such as extra virgin olive oil, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine and the renowned Terre Tollesi DOC wines represent strong points, while the presence of important companies in the fashion, steel, scientific research and infrastructure sectors reinforces the province's strategic role. Agricultural in its origins, Chieti maintains a rich tradition that expresses itself in the rural landscape and local handicrafts.
In terms of history, the territory preserves evidence dating back to Italic and Roman antiquity; the capital Chieti is considered one of the oldest cities in Italy and preserves important archaeological finds. Villages such as Guardiagrele and Lanciano, theatres of medieval traditions and craftsmanship, enrich the cultural picture. The province is dotted with historical sites, Romanesque abbeys, castles and churches that tell a layered history, while folklore is expressed in religious festivals and gastronomic fairs.
In terms of nature, the province offers a wide variety of environments: the Majella National Park invites the exploration of centuries-old forests, valleys, plateaus and hiking trails, enriched by a rare biodiversity. The artificial lakes of Bomba and Casoli are points of interest for nature and water sports enthusiasts.
