Colli di Bergamo Park
Access
Introduction
Description
Dominated by the summit of Canto Alto (1148 m), the park extends north of the centre of Bergamo and includes the historic and monumental area of the Upper City, the surrounding hills between the Brembana and Seriana Valleys and the lowland river environments along the Serio and Brembo Rivers. The areas of greatest naturalistic interest correspond to the mixed deciduous woods that can be found on the slopes of the Canto Alto and in the Giongo valley, as well as in the Astino and Allegrezza woods. Valmarina, on the other hand, hosts extensive pine forests of black pine and Scots pine. The plains and hillsides are affected by agricultural areas, while the Colle di Bergamo, towards the south, has terraced slopes designed by vegetable gardens and vineyards. As far as fauna is concerned, the presence of amphibians (such as the yellow-bellied toad, which is at risk of extinction in Lombardy) and birds (the great spotted woodpecker, the tree-creeper, the buzzard, the redstart and the imperial crow) is of considerable importance. Deer have recently been sighted, while roe deer are widespread throughout the central-northern sector. all the way to the city outskirts. The nucleus with the greatest architectural value is the Upper City; the western hillside of Bergamo is interesting, dotted with rural and residential buildings of considerable value. Also noteworthy are the complex of the former Astino monastery, the ruins of the Allegrezza castle, dating back to the 22nd century, and the Valmarina monastery, headquarters of the protected area's management consortium. There are several "roccoli", witnesses to the time when the practice of bird catching was widespread; today they constitute true green architecture in the park.
