Exiting the A5 motorway at Châtillon, turn left towards the town centre. When you reach the main square, turn right and follow the entire street to a crossroads. From here, continue straight on, following the signs for the hillside villages, particularly Domianaz. The road climbs the hill, passing through several villages, until you reach the turnoff for the panoramic road to Saint-Vincent, near Albard. You ignore this turnoff, turning left; after four hairpin bends, you arrive at the picturesque little church of Domianaz.
Continuing along the little road for about 6 kilometres, you pass a popular sports area. Next, with a series of bends, you reach the junction for Travod. Here, too, you ignore the turnoff to the right and follow the main road to the village of Nissod. Near a fountain 💧 there is a small car park 🅿️ where you can leave your car.
It is important to note that, during the winter season, the road is not cleared of snow. However, in the absence of snow, it is passable with due caution.

Description

The name 'Nissod' may derive from ancient local place names or refer to a natural characteristic of the area, such as a particular shape of the land or an agricultural tradition linked to the place. Although the precise origins are shrouded in mystery, historical documents attest to the presence of dwellings and agricultural activities from ancient times. The isolated location has allowed the village to preserve an authentic dimension, far from the modern hustle and bustle.
The history of Nissod is marked by climatic and natural events that have influenced village life. A recent anecdote tells of lightning striking the local chapel, an event that shook the community, but also strengthened the residents' bond with this sacred place. The cross dating back to 1700, damaged by the event, is a symbol of resilience and respect for the past. The chapel, dedicated to St Bernard of Menton, is a cultural and spiritual reference point for locals and visitors alike.
The surrounding area is characterised by broadleaf and coniferous forests, which offer a spectacle of colours and scents in every season. The climate, typical of mountain areas, offers cool summers and snowy winters, creating ideal conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. The geology of the place, with rocky outcrops and ancient paths, bears witness to the millennial interaction between man and nature.

There is no shortage of personalities linked to this village, who have left their mark on the local culture. Saint Bernard of Menton, a figure venerated in the chapel, is not only a spiritual icon, but also a historical one, thanks to his dedication to travellers and the mountains.
