Introduction

The Mont de Saint-Gilles, also known as the Croix de Saint-Gilles because of the white metal cross on its summit, is a mountain located at the entrance to the Val d'Ayas, overlooking the village of Verrès, in Valle d'Aosta.

.

Description

The Mont de Saint-Gilles dominates the village of Verrès and is located near the Villa Lake Nature Reserve. The surrounding area is characterised by forests of chestnut and walnut trees and enjoys a mild climate all year round. The presence of ancient irrigation canals, such as the Ru d'Arlaz and the Ru Herbal, testifies to the historical importance of agriculture in the area.
A white metal cross stands at the top of the mountain and is a landmark for the local community. The name 'Saint-Gilles' derives from the prevosture of Saint-Gilles, located in Verrès. However, there is no documented information on the first ascent of the mountain, either in summer or winter conditions.
From a mountaineering point of view, the Mont de Saint-Gilles is not among the best-known peaks in the region, but it does offer some interesting routes for hikers and mountaineers. One of the most outstanding routes is the 'Via Meno', a roped route on the east side of the mountain. This itinerary, characterised by rocky cliffs and sections of path, does not present high technical difficulties, but requires experience in exposed terrain.
The Lake of Villa, the Lake of Villa Nature Reserve and the Villa Castle Ravine are located in the vicinity of the Mont de Saint-Gilles, offering additional points of interest for hikes and visits of historical and natural interest.
