Access

To reach Lake Lod, there are a few main routes:

  • 1. From Chamois (by chairlift): The most common way to reach Chamois is by cable car from Buisson. Once in Chamois, the lake is a short distance away and can be reached with an easy walk of about 20-30 minutes along a well-marked path that is accessible even to the less experienced.
  • 2. **Excursion from La Magdeleine**: An alternative route starts from the village of La Magdeleine, allowing you to reach Chamois on foot and then continue towards Lake Lod. This itinerary is more demanding, with an altitude difference of about 500 metres and a duration of about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • 3. **Panoramic trails and variants**: For experienced hikers, there are panoramic trails offering breathtaking views of the mountains and the valley floor. These routes may require longer walking times and are ideal for those who wish to explore the surroundings with a more sporty approach.

Introduction

Lake Lod is a picturesque alpine lake located in the municipality of Chamois, Aosta Valley, at an altitude of about 2,016 metres. This lake is located in a panoramic position offering exceptional views of the surrounding mountains and the valley below. Nestled in the landscape of the Pennine Alps, it is surrounded by green slopes in summer and snow-covered slopes in winter, making it a popular destination for both summer excursions and winter activities.

Description

The name 'Lod' may derive from ancient local linguistic roots, indicative of local characteristics or ancient customs of the mountain population. There are no specific legends linked to Lake Lod, but the local tradition and the proximity to Chamois, the only municipality in Italy not accessible by carriageable roads, make this lake part of a unique and evocative context that preserves an atmosphere of Alpine tranquillity and isolation.
In addition to its natural beauty, Lake Lod is known for the purity of its waters and the panorama it offers towards the Matterhorn massif and the surrounding peaks. The lake is a popular destination for families, hikers and photographers, attracting visitors in search of peaceful and unspoilt landscapes. The particularity of Chamois being reachable only by cable car from Buisson adds charm to the area, making it one of the few alpine places left 'without cars', which contributes to its authenticity.

Near the lake is the Rifugio Ermitage, a refreshment point where it is possible to take a break or stay overnight. The hut offers typical Valle d'Aosta cuisine and a cosy mountain atmosphere, making it an ideal support for hikers.
