.Introduction
Cuorgnè is a municipality located in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont, and is considered one of the most representative centres of the Canavese area due to its geographical position and historical development. It rises on a morainic terrace shaped by ancient glaciers at the confluence of the Orco valley and the Canavese plain, surrounded by a crown of hills on three sides, while to the south-east it opens out towards the flat expanses leading to Turin. The municipal territory is crossed by the Orco and Gallenca streams, the latter coming from Monte Soglio; the alluvial morphologies and the presence of red and light granite islands testify to the complex and stratified geological nature of the area. The local climate has a very low seismicity and characteristic E values according to the national classification, with average autumn temperatures between 7°C and 17°C.
Description
The first human habitation in the Cuorgnè area dates back to the Upper Palaeolithic, a period when the withdrawal of ice made the Orco valley habitable. Near Cuorgnè stood the ancient settlement of Canava, a centre of Celtic and Roman origin that later disappeared due to a flood of the Orco torrent around the year 1000. In a strategic position between the mountains and the plain, the village was a pastoral centre, military junction and trading post. In the Middle Ages, the territory belonged to the Counts of Valperga and was the scene of the famous Tuchinaggio revolt (1386-1391), which involved the local population until the intervention of Amedeo VII of Savoy, the Red Count. The mediaeval village gradually reorganised itself towards areas safe from flooding, around fortifications such as the Round Tower and, later, the Square Tower, both testimonies of historical defences. In the following centuries Cuorgnè suffered sackings and epidemics, but maintained a central role as a commercial and productive crossroads, particularly for artisan and mechanical work.
The urban centre develops around the collegiate church of San Luigi, the patron saint, celebrated on 21 June. Traditions and historical events include the memory of the Tuchinaggio struggles and the community's religious festivities. In its hamlets - Priacco, Ronchi Maddalena, Ronchi San Bernardo, Salto, Sant'Anna di Campore - and in the alpine pastures, a lively rural and artisan reality emerges that is also expressed in the typical local products. The economy sees agriculture and small trade flanked by industrial activities, with the presence of mechanical and manufacturing companies. The social fabric is enriched by cultural, sports and volunteer associations, which contribute to the dynamism of community life.
Of particular interest are the series of cultural assets registered in the municipality: religious buildings of great historical value, centres of religiosity, architectural testimonies of the medieval period and modern manufacturing facilities. The town boasts 14 assets of historical and cultural significance, 8 of which are listed by the Superintendency. The morainic landscapes around the town are a favourite destination for hiking and contemplative trails, with itineraries offering views of the Orco valley and the surrounding peaks such as Cima Mares - the highest point in the municipality, at 1451 m.
