Introduction
The small church of the Alpini di Breuil-Cervinia is located just above the village, in a panoramic position overlooking the basin dominated by the majestic mass of the Matterhorn. It is dedicated to the Alpini of the Monte Cervino Battalion, the unit that distinguished itself for its courage and spirit of sacrifice during the Second World War, and today represents a place of remembrance and meditation.
Description
The building is a small stone construction, in a simple, mountain style, with a pitched roof covered in slate and a small bell gable that recalls the tradition of Alpine chapels. Inside, it houses essential furnishings and mementos dedicated to the fallen Alpine soldiers, testifying to the strong bond that the Valtournenche community has with the history of the Corps and with the mountains that were its backdrop. The small church, built in the second half of the 20th century, stands along a short path that leaves the centre of the village and climbs towards a small hill: its elevated position allows it to offer a privileged view of the town of Cervinia and the profile of the Matterhorn, the symbol of the entire valley. Every year, on Alpine anniversaries, celebrations and commemorative events are held there, reinforcing the sense of community and belonging.
The little church of the Alpini is not only a religious point of interest, but also a symbolic place that unites history, nature and collective memory. Those who climb up to it find not only a small place of worship, but also a natural terrace that tells of the deep connection between the mountain community, the Alpini and the Matterhorn.
