Introduction

The Passerin d'Entrèves Castle in Châtillon is an elegant example of how history, architecture and nature can intertwine into one fascinating narrative. In 1242, during feudal reconnaissance, the castle was already linked to the powerful Challant family, one of the most influential dynasties in the region. It was under their rule that the castle underwent significant reconstruction, begun in 1409 by Giovanni di Challant, who inherited it from his father Ibleto. This intervention not only strengthened its structure, but also gave it a residential character, as attested by the refined frescoes in the library, dating from the first decades of the 15th century.

The architecture of the castle reflects its many transformations over the centuries. Originally equipped with a hexagonal tower, demolished in the 19th century, and a drawbridge that no longer exists, the structure was gradually enriched and adapted for decorative rather than military purposes. In the 18th century, the castle took on its current appearance thanks to works that included the construction of a panoramic terrace, the landscaping of the gardens and the creation of a magnificent hall of honour decorated with elaborate stucco work. These interventions were further perfected with subsequent restorations and consolidations, also made necessary by seismic events that had threatened the building's stability.
The castle has welcomed many illustrious personalities, but its history is inextricably linked to the Challants until 1802, when the last heir of the family, Giulio Giacinto, died at a young age. From then on, the property passed to the Passerin d'Entrèves family, who are still its custodians today. One of the most famous members of this family was Count Crispino Passerin d'Entrèves, who made further modifications in the 19th century, including the construction of a rustic house and the creation of a surrounding park with an Italian-style garden, still one of the most striking elements of the complex.
Today, the Passerin d'Entrèves Castle is a private residence, but the charm of its structure, framed by monumental plants and manicured gardens, makes it one of the most sought-after destinations for visitors to Châtillon. Although not always accessible to the public, the castle continues to fuel the collective imagination with its legends and stories from the past.
