Introduction
Caravino, a small town in north-eastern Canavese in the metropolitan city of Turin, is located on a morainic plateau facing the entrance to the Valle d'Aosta and the straight moraine of the Serra d'Ivrea, in a position that offers particularly evocative landscape views. The village is dominated by Masino Castle, an ancient manor house that has been part of the municipality since 1929 and is the area's main historical and cultural attraction.
Description
The origins of Caravino are documented as early as the 11th century, but human presence in the territory is attested by Roman finds from the 3rd century. Historically, the municipality developed in the shadow of the powerful Valperga-Masino family, who ruled these lands for centuries, leaving traces in the local architecture and events. The primitive nucleus, called 'Castellazzo', rises on the summit of the most defensible relief, around which the five cantons were later born: Boschetto, Casale, San Rocco, Perosio and Carecchio.
The municipal territory includes, in addition to the village, the hamlet of Masino and covers an area of approximately 11.54 km², mainly hilly, with wooded areas and small stretches of flat land. The natural environment is enriched by panoramic viewpoints and paths ideal for walking, cycling or horse riding, with vegetation typical of the morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea.
Caravino's history is marked by medieval war events - such as the wars between Ivrea and Vercelli and the siege of the castle by Facino Cane in 1400 - and later reconstructions, under the rule of the Savoy family. Historical curiosities include the granting of the municipal statutes in 1480, signed by Antonio Gallitia and Antonio Alberti on behalf of the inhabitants.
Today, the local economy is influenced by the rural dimension: agriculture, sylviculture and small production activities are flanked by cultural tourism, mainly linked to visits to Masino Castle and initiatives promoted in collaboration with the AMI Ecomuseum. The patron saint's day (San Pietro) is celebrated throughout the year, as well as festivals and convivial occasions that keep community traditions alive.
