Bivouac Giusto Gervasutti

Introduction
The Gervasutti bivouac stands on a rocky spur at 2,835 metres above sea level, below the spectacular walls of the Grandes and Petites Jorasses. The first hut, made of wood, was built in 1948 by the SUCAI Subsection. It was named after Giusto Gervasutti, 'the strong' mountaineer from Turin, in memory of his first ascent of the East Face of the Grandes Jorasses. Following some damage, the bivouac was completely rebuilt in 1961, in wood and sheet metal.
Description
In 2011, 50 years after the last renovation and on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the National Ski Mountaineering School (www.scuolasucai.it), the SUCAI Subsection (www.sucai.it) and CAI Turin (www.caitorino.it) decided to build a new structure to replace the existing one.
The new bivouac - designed by LEAPFactory - is made of a modular composite sandwich shell and is organised internally into four rooms (entrance, dining room, 2 dormitories with 12 beds) for a total of thirty square metres and 1980 kilos of weight.
The electricity is produced by photovoltaic units with latest-generation accumulators and allows internal lighting and the use of hot plates for cooking. It is energy self-sufficient and, thanks to the presence of an on-board computer connected to the internet via satellite, the Gervasutti Bivouac is constantly connected to the outside world, detects the operating status of the electrical system and sends the data acquired.
