Introduction
The Martinotti Bivouac is a high mountain bivouac located in Cogne, in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park in Valle d'Aosta. Built in 1930 and dedicated to the Biellese mountaineer Alessandro Martinotti, who died in 1927 during a climb on Mont Mars, the bivouac is located at an altitude of 2,588 metres on a small rocky terrace at the end of the north-west ridge of Roccia Viva.
Description
This small 'old-style' hut measures 1.25 metres in height, 2.25 metres in width and 2 metres in depth, and can accommodate up to four people. Its privileged location makes it an ideal starting point for alpine ascents to Roccia Viva, Testa della Tribolazione and Becca di Gay. Access is through the Valnontey and along a steep scree slope that separates the Money Glacier from the Grand Croux Glacier.
From the bivouac, there is a splendid panoramic view: to the east, the majestic views of the Tribulation Glacier extend, while to the west, the Money Glacier dominates the landscape. Not far away, you can make out the orange outline of the nearby Borghi bivouac, located on a rocky spur in the middle of the Grand Croux Glacier.
Renovated in 1994, the Martinotti bivouac represents a historical testimony to classic mountaineering and continues to offer a safe refuge for mountaineers and hikers venturing into this fascinating and isolated area of the Gran Paradiso.
