.Introduction
Annecy is the capital of the Haute-Savoie département (Haute-Savoie) in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, located on the shores of the lake of the same name, close to the French Pre-Alps. The town rises 448 metres above sea level and is known as the 'Venice of the Alps' for its canals that criss-cross the historic centre. Its geographical position, between the lake and the mountains, has made it a strategic point of trade and cultural exchange between France, Switzerland and Italy over the centuries.
Description
The origin of Annecy dates back to Roman times, when the town was known as Boutae. In the Middle Ages, it became the seat of the Counts of Geneva and, later, of the ducal houses of Savoy. From the 16th century it acquired a central role in the Catholic Counter-Reformation, thanks to the work of St Francis de Sales and St Jeanne Frances de Chantal. In the 19th century, with the annexation of Savoy to France (1860), the city began a period of renewed growth.
The municipal territory is characterised by the presence of Lake Annecy, famous for the clarity of its waters and intense tourism related to water and seaside sports. Behind it rise mountains such as Mont Semnoz and the Parmelan massif, which offer ample opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter activities. The surrounding natural environment is protected by reserves and protected areas, making Annecy a point of reference for sustainable tourism.
The city retains a charming historical centre with medieval streets, arcades and colourful houses overlooking the canals. Among the monuments are the Castle de Annecy, former residence of the Counts of Geneva and now a museum, and the Palais de l'Isle, a 13th-century building located on an islet in the middle of the Thiou Canal, the town's landmark and museum. Gardens and promenades extend along the lake, such as the famous Pont des Amours.
The economy is based on tourism, which combines cultural and natural attractions, but also on crafts, small industry and activities related to universities and services. The city is home to numerous international events, including the International Animation Film Festival, one of the most important in the world, and sports competitions such as the Annecy triathlon. The local gastronomy reflects the Savoy tradition, with dishes such as tartiflette, fondue and raclette, accompanied by Savoy wines.
