Introduction

Aldino (Aldein in German) is a municipality in the Province of Bolzano, located in the southern sector of South Tyrol and characterised by one of the most distinctive environmental settings in the Dolomites. The village lies at an altitude of 1,225 metres, nestled on the Monte Regolo plateau, amidst extensive forests, canyons and alpine landscapes that bear witness to thousands of years of geological and settlement history.

Description

The municipal territory encompasses both the main town Aldino and the historic hamlet Redagno, separated by the spectacular and deep gorge of Rio delle Foglie (Bletterbach), which has become a Geoparc and a protected area due to the extraordinary concentration of volcanic and sedimentary rock outcrops of international interest. Important from a spiritual and cultural point of view is the Sanctuary of Madonna di Pietralba, a well-known pilgrimage site in South Tyrol set amidst forests and picturesque scenery. It is also home to an 18-hole golf course.
The Aldino Municipal Museum houses important art and rural life testimonies, including Baroque and Rococo sacred objects, while along the Rio Thal you can discover restored mills that preserve the memory of traditional workmanship and local rural ingenuity. The village also offers a variety of hikes, from easily accessible alpine hut trails to challenging ascents to Corno Bianco (2,317 m) and Corno Nero (2,439 m). The Passo Oclini ski area, located between these peaks, is a popular destination in both winter and summer.
Historically, Aldino has been attested as a settlement since at least the 12th century. Documents from 1309 attest to the presence of a chapel, while the local church received privileges and indulgences from the mid 14th century onwards. St Helena was identified as the patron saint of the community as early as this period. In the 15th century, the church was enlarged and consecrated, later becoming an independent parish church in 1896.
Aldino is characterised by a strong rural tradition and links to ancient customs: religious festivals and local legends are part of daily life, with numerous events, festivals and gatherings enlivening the seasons. In particular, popular faith links the area to the myth of the 'land of leaves', the ingenuity of the mills and the narratives handed down in the surrounding hamlets and farms.
