On 17 January 1845, Antonio Castagneri, a mountaineer and Alpine guide, was born in Balme. He is renowned for his numerous first ascents in the Western Alps (no fewer than 43!) and for being one of the first to practise winter mountaineering. An eco-museum dedicated to him and the Alpine Guides has been established in this Piedmontese town.
