On 11 December 1828, Alfred Wills, a magistrate, writer and mountaineer known for his numerous ascents in the Western Alps, was born in Birmingham (England). He recorded his experiences in a book, *Wanderings among the High Alps*, published in 1856. He was also one of the founders of the Alpine Club, which he chaired between 1862 and 1864. A mountain hut at the foot of the Fitz massif in Haute-Savoie is named after him.
