Access

From the motorway A5 exit at the Aosta East barrier and follow the signs for the Gran San Bernardo tunnel and, shortly after the second tunnel, leave the main road and turn right to head towards Valpelline. After passing the village, turn left towards Ollomont, which is reached after a few kilometres; pass the main town and just after the hamlet of Vaud take a small road on the left that leads after a few metres to the houses of Barliard, where there is a small car park on the left.

Introduction

This excursion is mainly in the forest and is therefore quite safe even after a snowfall, while to continue further it is necessary to assess well, especially when identifying the route from the regional road before Ollomont, the loads of the wide, steep slopes that descend from Monte Rotondo. The route is exposed to the east, therefore to the sun from early morning, and presents no difficulty whatsoever; as you ascend, there are beautiful panoramic views of both Mont Gelé and the Mont Rion - Pointe Fiorio chain and of the Ollomont valley below. There is also the possibility, given the numerous tracks, to come across some specimens of alpine fauna.

Description

From the car park, turn left past a few houses and, just past a small chapel, you will arrive at the starting point of the itinerary. In the presence of abundant snow, one must intuitively follow the track that continues alongside a small stream, arriving at a fence on the left; leave to the right the possible track that continues towards a small wooden bridge and, walking slightly uphill, enter the beech wood. In a short time, you reach a plateau where there is a beautiful hut (1585m); without going beyond it, turn right, climbing up steeply in places, and walking along the wide hairpin bends, you reach a first water intake (yellow mark). After a few narrow hairpin bends where the gradient increases noticeably, we come to a second water intake, take another hairpin bend to the right and begin to traverse northwards. After a few wide bends, you come in sight of the Chevrière mountain pasture, which stands on a truly panoramic balcony overlooking the Ollomont valley.
