Access

From Andorra la Vella take the [CG-3] north towards La Massana. At the first roundabout go straight ahead, at the second roundabout take the second exit remaining on [CG-3], then go through four more roundabouts for a total of 3.1km. At the next roundabout turn left onto [Av. del Ravell]/[CG-4] towards Arinsal for 2.4km (5.5km). At the roundabout take the second exit onto Carretera d'Erts/[CG-5] towards Arinsal for 1.4km (6.9km). At the next roundabout go straight ahead staying on the [CG-5] for 1.1km (8.0km). Turn right onto Ctra. de Prats Sobirans/[CS-530] for 200m (8.2km), then turn right again onto Travessia Prats Sobirans for 67m (8.3km) to the Parc Natural Comunal de les Valls del Comapedrosa car park on the right.

Parking

The 🅿️ car park, which charges a fee (approximately 3-5€/day), is located at the end of Travessia Prats Sobirans, inside the residential area of Prat Sobirans, beyond the tunnel with the wooden sign "Comapedrosa". This is the starting point of the route. Alternatively, there is a free car park 🅿️ near the park information point and the Arinsal chairlift, about a 5-minute walk from the start of the trail.

Access by public transport

The Arinsal car park (Aparcament d'Arinsal) can be reached by the Andorra la Vella L5 line, which stops near the chairlift. From there, walk through the tunnel marked "Comapedrosa" and turn right to reach the starting point of the route in about 5 minutes. Timetables can be consulted on the official Andorran public transport website.

Introduction

Return route that climbs the Vallone de Comapedrosa from the Prats Sobirans car park to the summit of the Pic de Comapedrosa (2,942m), the highest point in Andorra.

The route passes through three distinct environments the mixed forest of birch (Betula pendula) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in the first part, the subalpine belt with rhododendron ferrugineum (Rhododendron ferrugineum) and the extensive pastures of the upper glacial cirque, to the mineral terrain of the south-western ridge where the Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) is a frequent presence. The itinerary includes the Refugi de Comapedrosa (2,265m) as an intermediate stop and the Estany Negre (2,628m), a glacial basin surrounded by lichens and pioneer species such as the glacier buttercup (Ranunculus glacialis).

The recommended season is from July to September, when the snow cover is absent on the summit ridge and the high-altitude paths are accessible. The route is of EE difficulty in the upper part: the section from the upper basin to the summit requires sure-footedness on scree and rocky terrain, with occasional use of the hands on short, non-exposed climbs. In case of fog or strong wind, the descent along the ridge requires particular attention to reading the yellow markings.

Description

[0h00'T1] 0.00km 0m 0m GR11 GRP From the car park at Prats Sobirans (1.575m) 💧, take the dirt road that heads north along the Riu de Comapedrosa, immersed in a mixed forest of birch trees (Betula pendula) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Continue progressively uphill along the bottom of the valley until reaching a metal barrier where the gradient increases slightly.

[0h25'T1] 1.11km 141m 38m GR11 GRP Leave the dirt road at a signpost and take the path on the right that climbs the left orographic side of the valley. The path leads into a denser area of conifers and rhododendron undergrowth (Rhododendron ferrugineum). Climb up the steep slope in a series of regular hairpin bends until reaching the wooden bridge that crosses the Riu de Comapedrosa near Aigüetes Juntes.

[1h00'T2] 2.50km 449m 65m GR11 GRP Cross the bridge and continue the ascent along the opposite slope. The path becomes narrower and more stony, offering glimpses of the waterfall descending from the upper lakes. Neglect the diversions to the right for the Pla de l'Estany and keep to the left, ascending a grassy ridge that leads to a wide panoramic shelf with a signpost, the Collet de Comapedrosa (2,223m).

[1h35'T2] 3.80km 754m 75m GR11 Bear left and walk the short, slightly downhill stretch that leads to the threshold of the glacial cirque where the Refugi de Comapedrosa (2.265m) 💧.

[1h50'T2] 4.30km 796m 80m GRP From the refuge, take the path westwards again, crossing the valley of Les Canyorques. The path, less marked but marked by cairns and yellow markers, crosses high-altitude alpine pastures frequented by the Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica). Climb the scree slope that becomes progressively steeper to the upper basin that is home to the Estany Negre (2,628m). Neglect the path that descends to the shores of the lake and continue to climb to the right, following the track that climbs between the shale blocks, where the vegetation gives way to lichens and pioneer species such as the glacier buttercup (Ranunculus glacialis).

[2h30'T3] 5.50km 1019m 121m GRP Reach the upper edge of the basin and turn sharply right to attack the south-western ridge of the mountain. The terrain becomes exclusively mineral and the route requires sure-footedness and the occasional use of the hands to overcome short, unexposed rocky rises. Follow the yellow markings carefully to avoid going over unstable ground. Go over a series of bumps that form the summit before glimpsing the summit cross.

[3h10'T3] 6.80km 1260m 153m GRP Climb the last part of the ridge, now flatter, to reach the summit of the Pic de Comapedrosa (2.942m) [3h30'T3] 7.44km 1495m 156m.

The return is along the same route as the ascent. Pay particular attention to the descent along the ridge in case of fog or strong winds [2h15'T2] 7.44km 0m 1495m.
