Camino Francés de Santiago From Portomarin to Palas de Rei
Introduction
The devotional route has several possibilities and the so-called 'French' route starts in the Pyrenees. In the summer of 2022, the last six stages were covered, arriving in Santiago... below is a brief description of the second one.
Description
In Portomarin, you first pass the old church of San Pedro and then that of San Nicolas. After leaving the village and crossing the river, the track climbs steeply and finally flattens out. A cool, damp mist rises, making the route fascinating. Afterwards, there is a fairly long and somewhat tedious stretch as it skirts, left and right, a road with a minimum of traffic. At Castromajor, there is a small church of the same name. We follow a small asphalt road uphill without a car and, later, the pylon, different from the others, marks 78.1 km to Santiago. The Chapel of Magdalena is touched and then there is a break for lunch. After the break, the Crucero de Lameiros, a pillar with a carved top on both sides (from 1670!), is touched. Further on, a cross reminds us of an old pilgrims' cemetery, while at Airexe, the iglesia de Santiago can be seen. Trees almost close the path as if in a (cool) tunnel. Beautiful scenery and the shabby, crooked signpost finally announces Palas de Rei!
In summary: from hotel to hotel: 24.9 km, approx. 7h walk + 2h break, 3.5 km/h, 430 m asl.
