A mid-mountain village, rising about 1,200 metres above sea level, in the heart of the valley of the same name, about twenty kilometres from Aosta. Although it has been a difficult-to-access location for centuries, it boasts a history that is three thousand years old: in fact, in 1972, artefacts were found that some experts date back to the early Bronze Age, i.e. around 1200 BC. According to the historian and mountaineer Abbé Henry, the parish of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges is among the oldest in the region, dating back to the 9th century. This does not detract from the fact that until the middle of the 20th century there was no real road to reach it and that the appearance of electricity only dates back to 1920, thanks to the construction of a small power station on site. The local economy was, of course, rural and purely subsistence for centuries, while today the village is a renowned tourist centre, a destination for those seeking a peaceful holiday, far from the hustle and bustle of the big resorts.
